Drone strike kills dozens, including children in Sudanese city

(MENAFN) At least 13 people have died, including eight children, after a drone struck a house in the Sudanese city of el-Obeid, according to local medics.

Most of the victims were members of the same family, the medical group reported.

Although no organization has claimed responsibility, medics say the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out the attack in an area under army control, which the RSF has been attempting to breach for months.

As Sudan’s civil war between the army and RSF nears its third year, the humanitarian toll has been described as the world’s worst by the UN and aid organizations. Over 11 million people have been displaced, hundreds of thousands have died, and widespread sexual violence is being used as a weapon of war. Both the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces face accusations of committing atrocities.

Witnesses said the drone hit a residential neighbourhood in el-Obeid on Monday. The Sudan Doctors’ Network stated that the strike "reflects a dangerous escalation of the policy of indiscriminate killing and systematic bombing of safe residential areas."

El-Obeid remains under army control despite RSF advances elsewhere in North Kordofan.

Analysts note the city is a strategic target for the RSF, lying between the capital, Khartoum, and the Darfur region, where the RSF has established a parallel government and faces accusations of genocide.

The attack follows other RSF strikes in the area, including an assault on a power plant in el-Obeid and, according to the army, an attempted drone attack on Sudan’s largest hydroelectric dam near Merowe.
