Artillery shelling murders nine people in Sudan’s South Kordofan state
The Nuba Mountains Platform reported that forces of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu and allied with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), carried out the attack on residential neighborhoods. The platform noted that six adults and three children were killed in the bombardment. In response, Sudanese army forces launched an attack on the Taital area, from which the shelling originated, and reportedly took control of it. Neither the Sudanese army nor the SPLM-N and RSF have commented on the incident.
The cities of Kadugli and Dilling have been under siege by the RSF and SPLM-N since the early months of the ongoing conflict, and both have been repeatedly targeted by artillery and drone attacks. Fighting in the three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—has intensified in recent weeks, displacing tens of thousands of residents.
Across Sudan, the RSF currently controls most of the Darfur region, while the army holds the majority of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and forced millions to flee their homes.
