Sudan’s RSF is accused of covering up mass killings in El-Fasher

(MENAFN) Researchers from Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL) say Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have attempted to cover up mass killings in the city of el-Fasher by burying and burning bodies. The RSF captured the city in October after an 18-month siege, displacing and killing large numbers of civilians in the Darfur region.

Satellite image analysis shows tens of thousands of bodies were likely disposed of in multiple locations, including outside the city, indicating the RSF targeted civilians attempting to flee.

HRL states this represents a “systematic multi-week campaign to destroy evidence of its widespread mass killings,” which appears to be ongoing.

The RSF has not formally responded to the Yale report, though its leader, Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, previously acknowledged that some violations occurred during the city’s capture. He has announced an investigation into alleged abuses but denies that killings follow an ethnic pattern targeting non-Arab populations.

The UN has described the ongoing Sudanese civil war, which began in April 2023 as a result of a power struggle between the RSF and the Sudanese army, as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster. The conflict has displaced more than 13 million people. Following the RSF’s capture of el-Fasher, roughly 250,000 civilians remain trapped, with fewer than half having reached displacement camps.

The RSF has used its control over el-Fasher to strengthen its influence in western Sudan and has set up a parallel administration in Darfur’s city of Nyala. Meanwhile, Sudan’s army continues to control most of the country, with intermittent clashes ongoing between the two forces.

This HRL report highlights the difficulty in documenting abuses amid ongoing conflict, using satellite imagery to track changes in mass graves and other sites as evidence of potential war crimes.
